Description

Today, my work is mainly textile. My tools are thread, fabric, and lace. My research aims to understand and shape this material — to move it beyond its initial state and give it volume.

Biography

Caty Berip was born in Etterbeek on January 29, 1964. She lives in Ixelles. As a child, she grew up in her grandfather’s workshop, surrounded by wood, patinas, and precious materials.

After a very demanding career as a lawyer, she is now developing her artistic expression. She has set aside rigor, laws, and obligations to embrace a poetic practice where femininity takes center stage. Being born in the 1960s is not without meaning.

Feminism was only beginning at that time. In 2020, she depicted women through pies in which they were first trapped, then liberated, revealing a multitude of exuviae. During the same period, amid the Covid crisis, she also created plaster spheres — round forms symbolizing the act of curling up or withdrawal.

She has taken part in numerous workshops within various art academies. Ambivalence lies at the heart of her reflection: what she seemed to be may not be what she truly is. What appears may not be what is.

Materials and objects are diverted from their original use to create a sense of unease. Today, she works with soft materials, reclaiming fabric and thread to reconnect with ancestral gestures.
